EPL Targets: August 19th

Premier League is back in full swing and a six match Saturday slate (10 AM ET) headlines the main slate on DraftKings. This week DraftKings introduced a new way to play fantasy soccer, with the brand new Pick ‘Em contests making it fun and easy to get involved. Before you select your team, let’s break down my top targets at each position.

Goalkeeper

STUDS

Kasper Schmeichel – $5,400 – Leicester City – Schmeichel faces a Brighton Hove & Albion side that managed just six shots against Manchester City in their Premier League opener. While he may not see a ton of action, and looking past the four goals he conceded to a much stronger Arsenal unit, Schmeichel looks to be the ‘keeper best positioned to hit 10 points from the win and clean sheet bonus alone.

Others to Consider – Simon Mignolet (Liverpool; $5,900), Fraser Forster (Southampton; $5,600)

VALUES

Jack Butland – $3,900 – Stoke City – Butland faces the daunting task of keeping an Arsenal attack that pummeled Leicester with 27 shots at bay. The opportunity for saves will be there, and if Stoke is up to the task in their home opener, Butland could pay big dividends at near minimum price.

Defender

STUDS

Ryan Bertrand – $5,400 – Southampton – Bertrand took three of Southampton’s 13 corner kicks, and while it’s a small share, it certainly doesn’t hurt Bertrand’s fantasy appeal. He ended with six crosses and 12 fantasy points, and even though it’s a small sample size, Bertrand’s fantasy value looks to be on the rise this season with added set piece involvement.

Others to Consider – Cedric Soares (Southampton; $5,700), Alberto Moreno (Liverpool; $5,100),  Jose Holebas (Watford; $5,000)

VALUES

Trent Alexander-Arnold – $3,900 – Liverpool – Alexander-Arnold has been an early season revelation just two games into the season. The Liverpool right back had a share of corner kicks in their opener at Watford, and then scored his first Liverpool goal off a stunning free kick in Champions League play on Tuesday. Rostering a defender with set piece duty in a potent attack is usually automatic, and at $3,900, he could be one of the most popular players on Saturday.

Others to Consider – Patrick van Aanholt (Crystal Palace; $4,600), Jeffrey Schlupp* (Crystal Palace; $3,200) *if he starts

Midfielder

STUDS

Riyad Mahrez – $8,400 – Leicester City – Mahrez took two shots, put in four crosses (three corner kicks) and assisted on a goal to finish with 16 points in the season opener at Arsenal. Leicester have arguably the most favorable matchup of Saturday’s slate in Brighton & Hove Albion, and we can likely expect more of the same from Mahrez as the Foxes go in search of their first win of the season.

Others to Consider – Sadio Mane (Liverpool; $8,600), Mohamed Salah (Liverpool; $8,500), Robbie Brady (Burnley; $6,800)

VALUES

James Ward-Prowse – $6,300 – Southampton – Ward-Prowse took the majority of Southampton’s corner kicks and got off four shots to finish with 11 points in his season opener. It’s worth noting that he came off in the 71st minute, but it’s clear that JWP is going to be an integral part of the Southampton attack this season.

Others to Consider – Chris Brunt (West Bromwich Albion; $6,000), James McClean (West Bromwich Albion; $4,200)

Forwards

STUDS

Roberto Firmino – $9,100 – Liverpool – Firmino opened the season with a goal, an assist and 20 DraftKings points, and now faces a Crystal Palace side that shipped three goals to Huddersfield Town in their opener. He split corner kicks with Alexander-Arnold, and his goal came from a penalty kick, boosting his fantasy appeal with opportunities to accrue points both in open play and dead-ball situations.

Others to Consider – Alexandre Lacazette (Arsenal; $9,000), Jamie Vardy (Leicester City; $7,500)

VALUES

Jay Rodriguez – $4,900 – West Bromwich Albion – Rodriguez managed five shots in his West Brom debut, putting three on target in a spirited 88-minute shift. Four fouls committed and a late yellow card put a damper on his fantasy total (five points) but considering his involvement in the attack, he’s worth a long hard look at $4,900.

Others to Consider – Chicharito (West Ham; $5,800), Shinji Okazaki (Leicester City; $4,300)
